Writing

"Last week, my wife and I took our kids to Lake George for a vacation. It was the first chance we had to spend time up in the mountains with everyone together, and it couldn't have been a nicer experience. It was also the first opportunity I’ve had all summer to read an entire book. My wife bought me a copy of 1776, by David McCullough, and after looking over the first few pages, I knew it would become a big part of my vacation plans. I found myself sitting out in an old Adirondack chair every morning, with my first cup of coffee, reading as much as I could before the kids got up and we started our day."

I wrote that last year as the opening paragraph of "Eugster's Dairy." The complete story appears below, and McCullough's book turned out to be a great read. Most of my stories are about growing up in northern New Jersey during the 50's and 60's, when it could still be considered a rural area. If you are familiar with Bergen County, and how it looks today, you might enjoy a trip back in time after reading about the cows, tree huts, and the dreaded quicksand at: www.skipvanlenten.com.

The purpose of this site is to give myself an outlet for other writing projects, such as articles, essays, short fiction, and non-fiction. I will be adding more links soon, and hope you enjoy the site. Skip Van Lenten

A note to readers: Some of the stories here are in manuscript form, double-spaced, and others single-spaced. Please let me know which you prefer for easy reading. Thanks. skipvanlenten@gmail.com
